Not as level headed as Dom Alcuin Reid, but that's understandable. The points he's making cannot be dismissed.

Audiobook again; incredible story! Hearing it while reading Dostoevsky is interesting.

He's pointing to the elephant in the room. I disagree with him on the sede point of view, but he's done an admirable job of leaving that out so far. The Church has had a noted shift back towards tradition over the last two decades, especially among its younger priests. Questions this book raise up are going to have to be addressed.

Rereading after 11 years; I knew this was good, but I forgot how good. A page turner!

Gilson's book on St Bernard makes a great counterpoint to this rambling mess.

Alrighty then...

Got slowed down by the start of a new school year, but this book is incredible. Gilson is fast becoming a favorite, and St. Bernard has important things to say to our world. A love seeking Love.

Amusing side note: St. John Henry Newman became a Doctor of the Church while I was about halfway done with my third reading. Absolutely deserved, a great man and a great mind.

Weird personal note: we have lost much in losing Latin as the common language of the Church. So many footnotes to works in French and German of works that sound fascinating but which I'll never be able to read.

Most saints are pretty quiet people, living quiet saintly lives. This is not one of them. St Catherine, like St Francis, was an event.

Reading this online and it's been a while since I could. Easy to pick up again (he's currently talking about writing genres of the monks and their fascination with history). This has been a great book so far, I only wish I had a physical copy!
