This book is helping me understand my disappointment with Infinite Jest.

Really good until the last 25% or so.

Mind numbing. I wish Stella would have an affair with...is it Ron (?), the young doctor. Anything to break this cycle of boredom. Too many characters, no plot, not much of anything but vague local mythology and characters having stilted dialog.

This is a good one to donate. I'm struggling even finishing it.

Too many characters, too old fashioned a narrative, stilted dialogue, stereotypical characters, ugh so 70s mannered gothic. Can't stand the two aunts and the weird twins. I do like the South Carolina setting.

The Gately fever dream is rough going, especially this late in the novel. I'd be more tolerant of a multi-page fever dream earlier on. But by this point..eager to end this overly-long and rocky journey...no.

If only DFW had modeled the story of Hal and his journey on Joyce's Ulysses, we may have had something of value.

Dated, dull, slapstick with about 10% at best any real insight into anything.

This is even more slapstick and trite than I "feared" it might be. So disappointing.

Like sitting through a very long and not funny comedy sketch.

If ever a novel needed an abridgement, it's this. It's just too bombastic, too overwhelming, too much laughing at its own jokes and admiring its own superficial brilliance. Very disappointing, even given the 2% that is outstanding. Too much performance, not enough substance.

She is a willing prostitute living with her boyfriend who knows of and benefits from her lavish druggy hooker lifestyle. She couldn't escape Epstein? She feared for her brother? Excuses galore. She could have done a thousand things to escape. She didn't want to.

Lol, she lives with a boyfriend and has sex with Epstein and company, then she cheats on the boyfriend with an ex boyfriend who then moves in with her while she continues with Epstein. Drugs, alcohol, money, snd recruiting other young women to do the same.

At least she admits she enjoyed the lavish lifestyle. Thera er so many of us who were targeted and we said NO because we preferred to do honorable but lowly work as waitresses.

Ugh. Another American white sex slave story about a girl who knew how to run away, and did run away, but then she didn't run away when money, limos, drugs, and jewels were involved. Okay.
