An awkward novel but it picks up at 200.

I wasn't expecting that scene. Oh dear. How did this novel win the National book Award? Even without that unnecessarily detailed and violent scene, it's tedious. There's limited character development and a tired theme (divorce). Told from Shoyu's eyes, this novel might have held interest.

Ho hum

WE don't know where the book is going, it's meandering among the characters but this isn't The Magic Mountain, we need some plot. However, the departure is a good metaphor for loss beyond the plot device of the "rapture."

This is slow going. It's detailed and dense and I am tired from working a full time job for my entire life.

Ah yes, the inevitable Sophie's Choice story. The the "shrewishly lovable" but completely unlikeable protagonist. The woes of the digital world and the troubled teen and on and on. So contrived, gheesh.

I don't care for this type of biography with little to no interpretation of context and facts.

Amazingly I like this so far.

To me this is rather dull old-school biography. So much reads like a police report, with very little much-needed interpretation, not just piling on details. The biographer should be the interpreter of fact against context, culture, politics, etc., not the reader who doesn't have that information resident AND doesn't frankly have the time or energy to conduct oodles of outside research.

Half-awake night reading.

Way too much of the juvenilia for me.

We'll see if I finish this. It's on my optional read and definitely donate shelf.

Old style biography. But very good data, just a bit arduous at times.

This book is helping me understand my disappointment with Infinite Jest.

Really good until the last 25% or so.

Mind numbing. I wish Stella would have an affair with...is it Ron (?), the young doctor. Anything to break this cycle of boredom. Too many characters, no plot, not much of anything but vague local mythology and characters having stilted dialog.

This is a good one to donate. I'm struggling even finishing it.

Too many characters, too old fashioned a narrative, stilted dialogue, stereotypical characters, ugh so 70s mannered gothic. Can't stand the two aunts and the weird twins. I do like the South Carolina setting.
