Creeping along. I'm actually a bit depressed reading this, it's so disappointing.

Cartoonish, interesting, but not compelling even as an artifact.

Sigh.

Interesting details, but overly complicated plot and characters. It's a sensationalist serial work, so I shouldn't be surprised. But it makes for tiresome reading.

Pretty crazy sensationalist stuff

I last read this book circa 1981. It is more powerful today than yesterday.

Wow, after almost 50 years, this second reading goes to a whole new level. Why is this novel assigned in high school? It's much better suited to a life lived.

This would be an interesting pairing with Felix Holt the Radical.

An awkward novel but it picks up at 200.

I wasn't expecting that scene. Oh dear. How did this novel win the National book Award? Even without that unnecessarily detailed and violent scene, it's tedious. There's limited character development and a tired theme (divorce). Told from Shoyu's eyes, this novel might have held interest.

Ho hum

WE don't know where the book is going, it's meandering among the characters but this isn't The Magic Mountain, we need some plot. However, the departure is a good metaphor for loss beyond the plot device of the "rapture."

This is slow going. It's detailed and dense and I am tired from working a full time job for my entire life.
