bell hooks' beautifully written book is reaffirming for me how important a love ethic is for me to truly live in alignment with my values. Love is a cultural issue, it's a political issue, it's a class/wealth issue, it's a spiritual issue. But love is not some complex, undefinable thing that can't be held or named. "When we are loving we openly express care, affection, responsibility, respect, commitment, and trust."

Literally tragedy after tragedy for these characters. But boy, a good sob is hard to come by.

Also, yikes, the lengths that Norma's family go to keep her real family a secret is so awful. I'm excited for the reveal and the fallout.

It's actually insane that this was written 33 years ago because damnnnn this book is really getting into nuances about genderqueerness. Also crazy work to literally leave the love of your life because they want to go on hormones.

the police brutality and violence in this book is yikes but i feel like it’s necessary to convey the oppression. i’m listening to a bootleg audiobook and i love the bird sounds in the background.

This book is weird af but the prose is so freakin good I can’t stop listening to the audiobook.

I love to read and write. I like young adult, fantasy with a modern twist, historical fiction, and romance. My favorite author is Markus Zusak, but my favorite book is Ruby Holler by Sharon Creech. I enjoy reading in noisy places that smell like coffee (Barnes & Nobles) or curled up in my bed. I am a fangirl and I believe characters are real don't try and convince me otherwise because you will fail.
