why does chapter one make me kinda miss waiting tables?

Slowly but surely getting through this. I don’t want to rush it because it is a classic! But I am struggling ngl. I want to love it, but I just have to pay attention more to understand what they are saying (which is good, I need to be challenged lol)

I fear I am too American to understand this.
