Things I like: 
     - the discussion on what constitutes goodness: intentions or actions/outcomes
     - the twist 
     - the intense magic system - very creative 

Things I dislike:
     - the intense magical rules (reminds me of coding)
     - themes are too on-the-nose (gender inequality, racism, classism, etc). Another review said "this book felt like it was talking down to the reader" and so far I agree

Needs fact-checking. Refers to NSF-funded LTER sites as "environmental research" instead of "ecological research". Really lazy mistakes

Mayflies don't bite or sting. Any naturalist worth their salt would know that, especially if researching an aquatic organism. This line discredits the scientific merit this book may have had. The historical perspective may yet hold up, but starting to get annoyed with the jumping around and memoir-esque aspects. Really disappointing.

I'm obsessed with this writing style already. Reminds me of Barbara kingsolver, the way she immediately immerses you in a character's life with strong narrative voice

Probably gonna dnf this one. I cannot put up with another 900 pages of this. At least for now. I want to read stuff I actually enjoy and there is way too much in the docket to waste my time with this.

Girlfriend is low-key kinda dumb. Dislike how the author villifies mental illness. Airport book!

I never think I'm that invested in a Sally Rooney novel and then I catch myself staying up all night to finish it. Detached but captivating

Book club!!!!!

Just read a chapter with a fake research proposal and man does that make me feel good about my own science writing. I could tolerate this book until I started A little life again, the juxtaposition (I hate this word) between the two just make it so much worse

And just like that I'm back to Dear Comrade. I don't even want to keep reading.

This is just as captivating the second time around, even though I just read it in the fall. Makes me nervous to read Dear Comrade again...
