First 100 were slow, it's good now

Not sure what percentage I'm on as this is an audiobook and Spotify is clunky for that, but -- and maybe it's because I'm a bit sick right now -- hearing "sissy" physically read out loud so many times in reference to the main character feels like nails on a chalkboard

While the cultural impact of this book is undeniable and I’m learning a lot about Dominican history, I find it very difficult to read anything that renders women little more than their breast size. Trying to read fast to get it over with.

Ah great, an example of how to completely disrespect the lesson of consent in a children’s book! Character gets kissed on lips instead of hand in a classroom setting, then is punished by being locked in a small space with the person who is unfailingly attracted to them. More fat jokes earlier in the chapter. This book is veering on 2 stars for me.

Why o why are we making unnecessary fatphobic comments here……. reading this upon recommendation from a 9-year-old friend and questioning if this behavior exists in other middle grade series I’ve read over the years. Most likely it has to some degree as fatphobia is so ingrained in our society. But as I tell my friend, “fat” is not a bad word.

Not a fan of the gratuitous sexual assault moments that have popped up so far
