“…house purchases being so difficult that one Dayabhai Patel remarked (in 1968) that ‘the only property we can buy is a sum house. Then the whites turn around and say we’re creating slums.’” — the 3rd imperial parallel the Sikhs faced along with other people of color in housing discrimination

I’ve yet so much more to learn. So much about discrimination that I do not yet know about.

Reading this with an open mind… Quotes I enjoyed so far:

1) as long as the mind is caught up in false values, there cannot be fulfilment.

2) before we can understand the richness and the beauty of fulfilment, mind must free itself from the background of tradition, habit, and prejudice.

3) you are all depending for your spirituality on someone else; your happiness on someone else; enlightenment on someone else

“We do not have to accept the hand we are dealt—we have options and we have choices, and most of all, we have a perspective. We have a say in how the time we spend at work should feel. It is a sense of purpose, cause, or belief — a certainty of Why we do what we do — that underlies fulfilment. And we can demand it.”

I really wanted to like this book from the get-go. Unfortunately, I find myself dreading the first few pages. Is it just me, or the English translation is just really, really bad? It is not fluent at all! I truly cannot comprehend the hype around this book.

This book has changed my views on marriage, relationships, and singlehood so far. It has re-wired the way I think about finding a ‘suitable and potential life partner’ - a lot of wrong beliefs were crushed. I’m so glad I gave Tim Keller a second chance at his writings again. This book hasn’t disappointed me this far!

It's always about Jesus:

“Pastors, it's not your programs that will put your church over. Forget your programs! Find out what God’s program is and use it.
The same holds true for individuals. Find out what God wants. Find out what the will of God is for you. Don't do something just because you want to do it. Find out what God's Word has to say about your situation.”

“At that moment, Jairus had to choose. He had to face the question: "Where do I go from here? What do I do? Do I break and run home to my family, or do I just walk along leisurely with Jesus because He said not to fear?"
Jairus made the right decision to take Jesus at His Word. ”

Even if I don't understand.. I know Jesus never lies. If he says believe, I will believe. If he says do not worry, I will be at peace.

“They did not question for a moment whether they should go to the priests or not. They went, and the Word of God says, "And it came to pass, that, AS THEY WENT, they were cleansed" (or healed).”

We have received our healing the moment we pray; that is why we act by faith, on our faith, that we have receive the miracle that we need. Faith pleases God. We can have a confident expectation of good.

“If you listen to those around you, they'll keep you in bondage... But if you open your eyes wide to the truth of God's Word, you can change your destiny in life. If your destiny is changed, it will be because you realize the truth of God's Word and get up and walk in it. Find out what God wants from you, and do it.... Receive what God has for you! It belongs to you. Don't let the devil take it away from you.”

“And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.”
- To leave your old self and to pursue Jesus the healer
- Pursue not the healing but the healer
- Bartimaeus HEARD about Jesus
- We can be healed just by hearing about Jesus; hearing about the good news, that Jesus is coming ((back for us again))

“Faith in God cannot be quieted! When circumstances come in like a flood, the cry of faith will ring out the louder! It says here that Bartimaeus didn't shut up—he cried more loudly:
"Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me!" He screamed it at the top of his lungs.”

- I want to be like a Bartimaeus; I want to have bold enough faith to come to Jesus, screaming at the top of my lungs for healing!

“Too many of us want to live in the past, feeding off some great meeting we attended. We need to answer the question: "Where do we go from here?" Where do we go from this moment on? Do we live in the past, or do we forget the past and go on to the greater things God has for us in the future?”

With reference to Philippians 3, “I have trouble forgetting my past." You never were the catalyst who encouraged the stoning of one of God's chosen. You don't have to forget that. Paul did.”

I've always been keen on the topic of healing and faith. More recently, I've been searching and asking the Lord to reveal to me His will for the believer's healing today. It can be quite disheartening to know that not all preachers believe in the will of God to heal. Somehow, it never really sat right with my spirit, and those messages never stayed in my heart. I just knew that God is good and that He wants us well.

Interesting points:

Identifying underlying factor risks is crucial in maximising diversification benefits

Giving invt vehicles group like PE/hedge funds do not make them asset classes
- alt invt but may share same factor risks as traditional ivts

Variance optimiser; not treating them as asset classes

Diversification is often overstated

So far so good; such a technical book but I love how this helps break-down the traditional 60/40 portfolio allocation by introducing underlying factors I.e SD/geometric sharpe ratio/mean return. In most books I’ve read, majority would simply advise or briefly skim over the 60/40 rule without explaining why—I am glad I now have a clearer understanding! Also a huge fan of sample graphs/data sets fr btr illustration
