It reads really really slow. As a fan of the show, the book is nothing like it. The protagonist is far less interesting, there’s no good supporting cast of characters and the Montreal setting doesn’t really help a non Francophile. I’m considering DNF’ing at this point but might slog through it just to see if it gets any better.

This book needs the X-Ray feature. Way too many characters thrown into the mix with no way to remember who they all are, plus for some reason some characters call a person "Johnny" when he's actually named "Tyree". No explanation given. Another disappointing book - how do these get 4+ stars and so many people talking about how good they are?

"The phone in front of Sergio rang again. His head throbbing, he stuck his tongue out at it".

Sergio is one of the lead detectives and (seems to be) a veteran cop. Why is he portrayed like a petulant child here? Swear like an adult, FFS!

There is fast paced and there is erratic. This one is a lot closer to the latter. Also, I stumbled upon spoilers in one of the top Amazon reviews and that has soured this book for me a bit.

The cop dude? He’s Hopper from Stranger Things. Just got a hint about a little girl, possibly his daughter, dying very young. In a town with weird stuff going down, that’s definitely very Hopper-like.

Some are good-ish but most are mediocre.

The story is quite gripping but a few minor points: It shares a couple of major plot points with Larry A. Winters' legal thriller "Burnout", including the moniker of "Family Man" and the lone survivor girl. Also, the insight into the killer's mind (from their POV) is unsettling, which is good, but also too psychotherapy-like. Is the killer self-aware to that extent and purposefully evil?

OK, I did not see that twist coming. But then, also this: "His blue eyes are ......" and a few sentences later "I look into his gray eyes". Is he a shapeshifter? Does he have heterochromia AND multiple eyes?

I've read enough reviews of this book and of the author by this point to decide that this will be my last Freida McFadden book. It's 100% cheap thrills and so full of instant gratification that I feel filthy just reading it. It's the shock-value reality TV of books and seems to have a bunch of ... Tricia-like fans that worship the author. Just going to finish this book so I can hate it properly.

Gotta hand it to the author - she's written first person POV of two completely different characters - one of whom is a complete and total idiot. It takes all my willpower not to yell at that idiot and if she is not redeemed by the end of the story, I'll be mad.

One of the protagonists comes across as really dumb. The other gets some character development though, and the story is quite interesting even if in a cheap pulp novel manner.

The author seems to be a fan of Game of Thrones, especially Season 7 because characters now teleport. Also, either base your story in the US political system or just do your own thing. Don't change things as convenient. I can't believe I paid for this drivel.

The author should have replaced the President character with a mayor or even a governor, it would have made things more believable. There is already one huge factor that demands suspension of disbelief in the story, why add a few more? A cat that considers itself a dog and has Sherlock Holmes syndrome and then a President that sneaks out of the White House whenever he wants to? Come on!

Author names male cat “Lassie“, explains that the cat thinks it’s a dog. I say author has some weird cat issues they need to deal with.

Odd writing style. Author doesn’t seem to know the difference between how cats and dogs behave. I don’t regret buying this book - yet.

Some are quite good, some mediocre, a few plain bad. None so far have been excellent.

Came really close to the first book's path then went the Lincoln Lawyer way huh? The author is running out of ideas.

There’s a bit in common plot-wise with the first Marc Kadella book. I’m hoping it doesn’t end the same way or it’ll just end up making the protagonist look like an idiot.

The author needs a proofreader - he gets his own character's names wrong multiple times across multiple books. Of course, it happens with the name of a non-white exotic-wily-charms character. The author has the typical systemic racism fueled white-is-default thing going on, so there's that.

I’m getting kind of tired of a couple of characters having their charisma dialed up to 11 using it like a cheat code through every situation. FFS have a few people immune to their charm or it just becomes a lame plot device. Also, why is the protagonist part of a comic relief side plot here? On the flip side, a ton of characters share the spotlight so that’s great.
