I feel like this book has a lot of potential but it is also super annoying at times. It's just over the top.

"only peace brings peace," a pretty idea, I wish it were true. I suppose it worked for Odo, who just fucked off to the moon. "We make justice here, or nowhere." I'm with that guy.

For about the first half of this book, I found I chafed against some things Foo said. Soome misconceptions about the mind, the quick way she dismissed different techniques and therapies, things like that. But as I went along this lessened and I found as the book continued on, as a reflection of her own mentally journey, I enjoyed it more and more. Some truly wonderful insights occur near the books conclusion

"because of its repetitive nature, complex trauma is fundamentally relational trauma... caused by bad relationships with other people -- people who were supposed to be caring and trustworthy and instead were hurtful. That meant future relationships with anybody would be harder for people with complex trauma because they were wired to believe that other people could not be trusted."

i feel like this book could be at least 50% shorter than what it is, there's just like. too much going on that i don't think is really necessary. however some of it is pretty interesting and the moth guys are pretty cool.

Here is where I really chafe against the grouping of survivors of abuse, torture, etc with (american) combat vets.
Yes people in extreme situations will do extreme things, including morally reprehensible things. But to compare people who have been abused who lash out to.... People doing war crimes, well, I can see where Herman is coming from but I'm not a fan.
