I got an ARC if this through work ages ago and tried to read it because I had a bad feeling about it, but I guess I put it in the back of my mind because reading the first chapter made me want to jump out of my skin. This does NOT seem like it's going to be a responsible portrayal of a neurodivergent character.

Started slow but now I've been sucked in! I wish the execution was better but honestly it's fun enough that I'm not even that bothered by the writing.

Assigned for one of my summer classes. I'm really glad I found this free on NC Live because the writing is super self congratulatory :(

Ok so like it started like one kind of book (gay, cute) but then there was a 20 page aside about like...physics? Fantasy physics? What is homeboy trying to do to us with these books though

I think I like it but also the structure and chronology are confusing the fuck out of me

Immersion-ruining detail: if you're describing a battle where one army is archery-dependent and the other is cavalry dependent, and then you tell us it's raining, that changes EVERYTHING and you can't just ignore it. I can't believe that of all the authors I've read that Guy Gavriel Kay would be one to make such a glaring error. That's like, Plot Holes 101. :(

I love KJ Parker but I am seriously side-eyeing the central conceit of this novel (that the law is decided by "lawyers" fighting to the DEATH over their clients). Like, if it was a trial by combat situation for life and death decisions that might be one thing, but it's for civil cases too? I'm trying but man, idk how far I can suspend my disbelief here :-/
