Fun way to start. A bit of a groan at the meme language but I'm having fun imagining what totally not D&D spells are being cast.

There are so many instances of the author using esoteric words for no real reason other than to sound smart but then just... not using them correctly, which I think an editor would have caught? I don't know. There's not a lot I can say about the plot and characters at this point. I don't know how there's half a book left. It's no If We Were Villains.

I didn't realise this was a prequel, which is a good thing. It works fine as a standalone. So far it's an idiot plot which hinges on Holly being both extremely annoying and conveniently stupid. But maybe something saves it?

i can't say matilda has no characterisation but she sure is difficult to root for. the supporting cast are very dull so i need notes:

aaron - the one with a wife
scott - the one without a wife
rory - the hot one who keeps being described as puppylike but is kind of just a shithead
sian and adele - same character different jobs
faith - exists
christian - exists

obsessed with rory being shocked and appalled at the concept of people doing murders while being a homicide detective. great stuff babe, nailing it

love love love the prose, the cleverness of the two different POVs
