Classic case of a terrible narrator ruining a book.

Reading again to compare to the new Apple+ series.

I’m not even 20% into the book, but so far it’s so full of stereotypes I’m finding it frustrating. Nina likes books. She does not like people who do not like books. There have been some nods to Pride and Prejudice, so it could be that’s where we’re headed. But for now, all kinds of stereotypes are laid on really thick.

Everyone is ridiculously stupid except for Laura Chambers. It’s lazy writing.

I’ve always liked Penn and Teller and Penn Jillette. This books makes me like him less.

Why is this book soooooo long? The section about visiting the sculptor isn’t necessary. The part about Hiram at the party is….weird, out of place, and unnecessary.

Cool stories, no evidence for anything, so far. It’s all pretty ludicrous misinformation so far, but I got it for free.

Really enjoying the story, but NOT the author's style when it comes to sexualizing women. Very frustrating.

Oh, no. This book was written by a man who has clearly never had any women as real friends and never asked for a woman’s opinion on his manuscript. I’m not sure I’ll make it through this one.

This “brief history” is not brief enough and is in need or a more aggressive editor.

Having a hard time with this one. Star is…. So far she is awful and I have reason to care about how she’s going to put things right after blowing her life up because… why? Because she got drunk? Because she’s not smart? I can’t tell. She’s awful.

I have the audiobook and I’m not sure who is more dramatically overwrought here, the author or the narrator. It’s not a good combination.

How on earth is a book about a presidential assassin and a sex cult so boring? And the book is mostly about Horace Greeley, who was neither an assassin nor a member of the sex cult.

MG is one of the most insufferable leads I’ve come across in a very long time. She always thinks she is the smartest person in the world and it’s very clear she is not.

I am now hate-reading this terrible book only because I paid for it and Audible changed their return policy and because I’m packing to move and don’t mind a book I’m not invested in right now.

Oh my god, stop saying Muggle!! I’m not sure I can finish this book.

I’m near the beginning of chapter two and the main character has referred to other people as “muggles” 2 or 3 times now. It’s super cringe. Oh, no. 4 times now.

SUPER confused by the audiobook production choices. James Watson is from London, abut the first person narration is read with an American accent and James only sometimes sounds British. Charlotte always sounds British.

Still on the first chapter, but so far I’m not enjoying this much as the other Charlotte Holmes series by Sherry Thomas. A Study in Scarlet Women starts that series.

I have the audiobook and I’m not a fan of the narrator. Her inflections are strange and she reads very slowly. I had to set it to 1.5 speed so it sounds reasonable.

At about chapter 20 or 21 I had to check the book description because I wondered if I made a mistake thinking this was a mystery with a woman who just opened a detective agency. We’ve now spent a dozen or more chapters learning about her childhood and history as a nurse in WWI.

This is Mean Girls but with with middle aged women and without the humor, which just makes it feel kind of pathetic.

This book is a hot mess in need of an editor.
