Look, I love Gothic Horror, and I get why incest is a trope of the genre, but every time I read one I’m like “maybe this time” and every time I am disappointed. Still great so far otherwise.

I’m considering DNFing this, which is so disappointing because I really wanted to like it. Admittedly I wasn’t a huge fan of the source material so I’m not surprised I don’t like it, but it is only seduction and no romance and I just can’t find myself rooting for any of the characters. Except maybe for the MC to become a wealthy widow.

Honestly no one can cause me to be filled with rage at the injustice that their characters face quite like Hendrix. I always have to space it out so that I don’t, like, start a fire with my rage. (I mean this is in the best possible of ways, I’m not mad at the book, it is amazing)

I know there are so many other weirder things I should be wondering, but if each generation is so worried abo I having an heir and a spare, where are the aunts and uncles?

I might DNF this book here at 80%. I’m so mad that after all the characters have been through that a miscommunication trope is dragging out what the author should be able to wrap up in what remains. It’s just dumb and frustrating. I know this is a duology and it just feels like unnecessary stretching out of a story. It is completely ridiculous of [redacted] to suddenly trust [redacted].

Ugh Spotify glitches out and now it won’t let me listen to any more for 5 days. This book is already too damn long. It’s good but ffs 13 hrs is too damn long. PLUS it is book 1 in a duology? It better not end on a cliffhanger or so help me god.

“Enough of this tedious romantic side-plot” Oh I wish book, but I get the feeling it’s gonna keep happening. Luckily the book is interesting enough for me to push through

UGH! If you are going to use pictures to augment your story, make sure those pictures actually match your story. Because someone like me will pour over them and wonder “why does the break room look like an office?” And “why does the drive through have them coming to the window on the passenger side?” About the included blueprints. Also the “first location” pic doesn’t match a burger joint built in 1981.

As someone who is into history, I appreciate how much they are shown to be bathing. Yes, Karen, I swear, people bathed back then!

I lowered my reading goal from 175 to 100 because I've been having a real reading slump of late. Getting back into theatre while still finishing my degree is proving to be A Lot, and my brain just doesn't want to read lately. I challenge myself because it is fun, but it wasn't fun, so I changed it.

I can always up it again if the spirit moves me, of course.

Apparently I had a bunch of reviews that I just never clicked "Post" on, so if you see me reviewing a book I read like 5 years ago, that's why.

Big lessons so far:
- Columbus and other colonialists used accusations of cannibalism to justify their oppression and murder of indigenous peoples.
- It's hard to define cannibalism without also including things like breastfeeding and taking communion.
- Praying mantises have been unfairly maligned.
