Excellent.

My heart breaks for all those who endured the torture of being enslaved. I don’t understand how anyone could inflict this on another person. Humans are capable of such evil.

The author talks about how when Africans were sold into slavery, they were a part of disparate groups, there was no black identity. It’s interesting how common identity is formed. Everything is constructed in the social world.

This story has become very funny to me (and it’s definitely the author’s intention)

Over halfway through the third story. I’m interested to see where it will go, although it is also painful to read. I find Kant to be more sympathetic than the first two main characters, but I’ll have to see if that changes

Lots of parallels between the main character in “The Feminist” and the main character in “Pics”.
I’m loving the theme of rejection (an appropriate title) in these stories. Looking into the characters’ psychologies is fascinating. Honestly I would love to write an essay on the first two stories and really analyze them

1. The Feminist

Wow, what a stellar start to the collection.
At one point I felt nauseous, it was that disturbing to me.

I hope to articulate my thoughts at some point.

How modernization is presented doesn’t make sense. How can modernization be both the spread of Christianity and then include secularism too? I think the definition of modernity in this book is just the general concept of the new Western ideas of each period of history. For some reason this definition doesn’t feel satisfactory to me.

I don’t appreciate what the author implies about the relationship between the European colonial project and modernity. Yes, colonialism brought “Western” science to the rest of the world, but the author also presents modernity as including liberalism (eg separation of church and state), and the treatment of indigenous peoples was verifiably not liberal in this sense.
