Beautifully melancholic. All you expect from this genre defying, poetic writer. My heart is sore and there might just be a tear or two after finishing this.

Heart breaking, life affirming, resilience and friendship. Difficult childhoods and relationships come full circle as this book examines Queenie's experience and her personal rise to a woman who is both fragile and tremendously strong. I am a little bit in love with these characters, all maternal instincts and the desire to see women thrive and succeed against the backdrop of modern multicultural London. Wonderful.

Gripped. A dark and savage tale that left plenty to the readers imagination. Modern Gothic, your sympathy left with the so labelled criminals. I will be reading more from this author.

With exquisite prose this book is a heart rendering portrayal of tragedy, loss, fear and longing.
Crafted with care and kindness through the eyes of a smart and not particularly empathetic child, the human damage from atrocities spanning three generations of one family are cleverly unveiled. Though the patterns continue to repeat; there is love, hope and heartbreak and the rippling effects of survivors guilt.
