I have to admit that I am confused about the setting. On one hand they keep talking about California and driving to places in California. Anna says that she has never been out of the state. But then on the other hand they mention Fort Bragg a few times (now called Fort Liberty) which is in North Carolina. She went from a foster home at Fort Bragg to a foster home in Mendocino, California? Not sure what I am missing.

Olalla is interesting so far and I have hopes that it will be more fulfilling than the previous stories.

After Will o the Mill came Markheim which is just a guy killing a man and then talking to some kind of devil thing. It was weird and I didn't understand the story at all.

Thrawn Janet was so hard to read with the old Scottish "speech" that was used but was basically a story of a witch and sending her off to hell. It was also weird and just meh.

So far I am underwhelmed with the book in general.

Here is my current review of the stories I have read:

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was disappointing. I knew the gist of the plot as it is such a familiar one. But I just didn't find the writing to be all that compelling or the actual story to be all that great.

Next came Will o' the Mill which was basically about an adopted boy who wanted to get married but then didn't get married and lived alone.

Currently reading it slowly. I read the English version of the first story and have translated half of the first part of the story in order to practice my Spanish.

Life has been a bit crazy so I've been slow reading. This is an interesting book. There are scenes I could definitely do without (like pgs 171-175 with the extremely disturbing and disgusting dream he endures). But the writing is compelling enough that I want to keep reading, even if it is all a bit jumbled and there are scenes that gross me out.

I can see why this book resonates with so many people. It is well written, and has language that makes you feel as though you are talking to a best friend. However, I am seeing some misunderstandings of Christianity that may be leading people astray. From her views of baptism, what love is, and her emphasis on identity (good old identity politics), I can see the progressive movement in her writing.
