Marty Beaudet is 20% done with The Cutting Edge
I've met 24 of the protagonist's hair salon clients by the end of the seventh chapter; coupled with her first-person description of them, it feels a bit like a stand-up routine, as she vents her complaints to the reader. But there's just enough snarkiness to keep it humorous, so I don't mind too much.

Irresistible character, telling his twisted tale in first-person.

I've finally gotten into this story, but had to skip a chapter with torture in it. Unlike most mysteries, you already know "whodunnit" in this one. You just have to wait for the protagonist to figure it out, so it's a bit anticlimactic.

Writing is good, but plot is off the shelf so far; a male and female detective on the trail of a child-killer. Seen it a million times.

A slow burn. It's as much about the personal issues of the detective as it is about the unsolved murders.
