DEAR GOD the RAGE I feel on behalf of this woman. Olds is INCREDIBLE at personifying the pain she felt, what an absolute banger beginning to this collection. Holy s***

I can immediately tell this is going to be special. I have the strong compulsion to skip all of my responsibilities and spend the day finishing this. As it is I'm going to be squeezing it into every free moment I can get. Curing my reading slump fr

just hit "googling strangers" again which means it's time for my regularly scheduled meltdown 🫠😭

"If the storyteller wasn't convincing, his listeners might kill him. (Rejection slips are a recent development.)"

"And then I recalled the resolution I had made while I was on the phone with Piya: that I would keep faith with myself." I cannot describe how unbearably hard this moment punched me in the gut. This is a masterpiece of a book, truly.

This book is going so hard in so many ways. I feel like a kid watching Indiana Jones for the first time again, discovering all the joy and excitement that comes from piecing together a historical narrative from myth in the places it happened, and hey this time there isn't any white saviorism or colonialist apologia. (Well. there IS some classism. but it's a theme, the MC is working through it dw)

"Somehow is a weasel word; it means the author didn't want to bother thinking out the story" lololololol get them ursula

I just know this book is going to hurt my feelings so hard

I have to be so, so honest. I am currently 65% sure that the murder they think they've witnessed is some kind of elaborate psyop-cum-drag performance meant to recruit them all into the CIA. For some reason.

This is an absolute delight. A bloody, violent, irreverent, ahistorical delight.

"He was my echo. Everything I do is quieter now." OUCH! OWIE!!!

Leigh, baby, I'm sorry to point this out but Will is not the only person sending mixed messages in this relationship. Please either stand up or leave that depressed man aloneeee

Hester and Richard are going to make me CRY. More old fairytales about aging people finding love please omg
