This world is really, really rapey. I mean, really.

Did this mysteriously morph into a middle-grade novel while I was eating dinner?

This is told in an experimental narrative style that hasn't won me over yet. I'll give it more time, but I don't know about this one.

"It wasn't that the Mustang was the fastest car ever built, but the muscle behind a 4.6-liter 32-valve V-8 engine beat out the majority of the competition on the roads. He'd spent a good deal of time and money on modifications [ed. long-ass list follows, which I'm skipping]. All-in-all, it gave his six-speed trans an approximate horsepower of 720..."

What am I reading. JFC. I should just wear a hair shirt instead.

"There was no question what cut of beef Li was trimmed from. His abs were a tightly formed six-pack made of mahogany and steel, and his broad chest looked as though it could withstand a blow from a sledgehammer."

The whole book is like this. I feel more like I'm rubbernecking than reading.

All this talk of "glory swords" has me snickering like I'm twelve.

I love the concept for this novel, but I'm finding the main character bland. She's also so socially awkward that she comes across as stupid at times.

I will finish you before the library takes you back, so there, digital loan! (In other news, this book came very close to making me cry tonight.)

This is very good. It's also not at all an obvious choice for conversion to a movie; I'm finding myself curious about how the filmmakers approached the challenge.

"I'd read in a magazine once that the German language had a word meaning 'a face that cries out to be punched,' and if so, it was the perfect description of Mathis."

This was awesome enough to look up. The word, apparently, is "backpfeifengesicht."

I am absolutely loving this book so far. A delightful main character in a strange and dark world.

This is pretty mediocre so far.

"They even folded the fitted sheets," she said. And then she let me go in order to knock back the aspirin.

"That's impossible."

"That's what I always thought, but it can be done."

I don't trust Christine at all. No 300 year-old vamp could truly be this useless.

"Call me crazy," she continued, "but one of my big hostess things is that nobody gets cuffed to a radiator. Everybody gets a napkin with their drink and nobody gets cuffed to the radiator."

"Changing the course of history is way easier to do than you think. In fact, shit! If this is what we think it is, you have the potential right now to call up something that could destroy us all. You could rip the fabric of the universe."

Poor Dillon!

I understand why Ryko has so much venom towards Eona, but it's awfully hard to hear him express it. The odds are so stacked against her that it's hard not to empathize when she conceals information, even though it's easy to guess that her lies will cause problems down the road.

These swords really need an attitude adjustment.

"And then I tasted him--sweet vanilla and orange like his dragon." That's like making Lex Luthor taste like a milkshake.
