It's been less exciting than I expected, but a solid commentary. Rich details. Conservative standpoint. Good applications. Not bogged down in technicalities. Third in my favorites list for 1 Sam. behind Dale Davis and NIVAC

Just finished his book on congregational singing which includes some of the same stuff. I'm marking this one up too! Hard to get there on some of his arguments, but other points he makes are good.

Huge section on biographical info of hymn writers through the centuries.
Just got into the thick of the next chapter on worldly techniques. Some unconvincing arguments, but at least someone is trying to tackle WHY some music is bad vs good. It’s at least helpful to think about where we stand on it and why.

So good, but so bothering. Hard to read because I see so much of this in society and it feels like we’re crumbling. Bothers me because I haven’t seen solutions yet. Nailing it though.

Pastoral and devotional in the intro. Will read closer to last each week, but a fine book.

Ryan Rench is starting The First Book of Samuel (New International Commentary on the Old Testament)
Follows MT primarily, but "not because the MT is perfect, but because it is time again to read the MT straightforwardly and determine whether, with the present knowledge of Hebrew grammar and style, we can make good sense out of the MT itself — the grammar includes, of course, discourse grammar, that is, supra-sentential grammatical analysis, as well as the styles I have discussed."

Ryan Rench is starting 1 and 2 Samuel (The NIV Application Commentary Book 19)
I appreciate that in the intro, the author makes it clear that despite the many books that are trying to muddy the waters on the authority of the Scriptures, the books of 1 and 2 Samuel are authoritative canon and we can wholly trust them.

I love any book that helps shape my thinking. The chapter on not "running" a church but caring for people was so helpful, as we are just getting in on what God is already doing. We're not manufacturing it. Very thought-provoking so far.

I set this aside after realizing I'm neither a visionary nor an integrator... I am both, and that's not what this book wants you to be! I really like analyzing my staff to see who would be the right fit for these roles, and this book has been one of those brain-worm seed-planting books, but I have other things to get to, so this is not a super important book right now. Interesting, though. I think I'll finish it.

Made some more progress on this yesterday. I started it because I really like Munger, and I love his quotes throughout, but it is a strange book to me. It's Munger's thoughts and then the author's thoughts after that, but it is SO investor-oriented that I'm having a hard time finding personal value. I just laugh at Munger and appreciate his mind, but that's about it. Probably won't finish this book.

I've been learning things about the history of congregational singing. May is our choir and special music "sabbath," and we are using the month to focus on congregational singing.
