I’ve never read another book like this- it sheds light on life in the south post-civil war: freed slaves with very little options, entitlement among southern landowners, confederate soldiers returned home with no prospects and no compassion for freed slaves. It’s gut wrenching and illuminating. I feel stupid to be so shook by some of the reality depicted here. Racism is so ugly, and such a part of our fabric.
