Currently on Chapter 2. Finding it hard to get into it. Reads more like a history than fiction. I love some of the prose but so far it isn't really engaging.

First impressions: First person present tense sets us up for fast pace. Lots of simple sentences most of them starting with "I" . Two different points of view and both use first person. Don't feel a distinction between the characters. Don't know what they look like. By second elsa chapter start to get a little more description. This helps it flow better.

After 3 chapters I haven't learned anything except that the goal is less but don't try to be perfect. Very slow and rambling start.

I don't think I would have got into this book if not for the audiobook. The narration is fabulous! It does begin a little slowly but seems to be shaping up to be a lovely cozy mystery for kids. It might be classed as a fantasy or adventure but the overall feel is super cozy (cozy bookshop, cozy cafes, lots of tea.)- British narration emphasizes this and it is a comforting and intriguing listen so far.

It started off pretty good but the author skips over what could be exciting tournament scenes and the mystery and romance both feel forced. Perhaps the next book in the series will be better.

I guess it is too early to give up on this book. The writing is great and I think it is an interesting world but the plot might be shaping up to be a Harry Potter clone. I should keep reading because at this point i would recommend it to advanced readers who like HP but i also heard there are some tough subjects in here that may not be suitable for younger audiences so i will try to persevere.

I love plot and the quick pace of this book, however I found the writing a little too simplistic. There were some moments that were great - feeling the dragon’s hot breath for example, but other times such as describing Maeve’s struggle to fit in with the Druids it hasn’t said how she is struggling. How is she relating to the others? Give us a scene that demonstrates why she feels this way.

DNF .... for a series opener this was not well crafted at all. I had no interest or attachment to the characters and quickly lost interest in the plot that outlined the group’s journey from town to town but without much consequence or intrigue. I heard the series improves on later books but I am happy to quit here. There are plenty more fantasy series left for me to try.

A book for mothers clearly written by a mother... Some scenes are giving me parent anxiety. I don't think my husband would get this book.

The first few chapters were very promising, as Seabrook deconstructed the songs he discussed. Now in chapter 7 the book seems to be getting more history/biography of the writers/producers and less about the music itself.

I thought this book would be a breeze after the fabulous introductory chapter. Unfortunately as other reviewers have noted the over the top not stop attempts to be humorous, overuse of metaphors and British slang make it hard to read through from start to end. I have nothing against the British slang or cycling slang but unfortunately it makes this a little hard to follow. I might skim to the end.

Still going strong. Among the various episodes of domestic drama in the book are interspersed intelligent arguments of social policy, divisions of class etc. I quite enjoy these passages.
