I really wanted to like this book--swords and sorcery and romance!--but it's very slow paced. Hardly anything happens... It's just travel, camp, exposition via dialogue, Cammon senses something, Kirra and/or Donnal shift, lather, rinse, repeat. Occasionally they go somewhere and talk to someone new before going back to travel, camp, talk, travel... I'm still listening to it on audio, waiting for something to happen.

The first chapter drew me in... a barkeeper planning to rob a few travelers blind. Ha, not so simple, buddy.

But wow, the first scene of Chapter 3--why?! It was like watching paint dry. The author used the excuse of a new character among the mains to explain, and explain, and explain... There were just paragraphs of exposition in dialogue, the main characters turned encyclopedia. Excruciatingly slow.

So far, a complex fantastical version of historical elements with beautiful, sometimes overwritten, prose and lots of exposition, uplifted by the secondary characters Ammar and Rodrigo (who steal the show). It's a slow start, to be sure, but I have a feeling it's about to pick up in Ch. 4.

A bit superficial in the character development department, but the "tyranny of good" setting and the adventure itself is interesting.

Interesting premise, but the old-school omniscient takes a bit of getting used to. Really enjoying the banter and the spoofing of LOTR-type heroes... :)
