There's definitely no slow burn here. This book gets off to a very fast start and I can't wait to see the train wreck that unfolds. David Joy is such a talented storyteller.

Never read this one before, but I already know it's far from McCammon's best. I hadn't read his earlier novels until recently. The consensus seems to be that his first 3 novels are not representative of his work overall and I tend to agree. At least with the first 2 books. Baal was rather boring overall and Bethany's Sin was just okay. I'm in the mood for some cheesy horror tho and so far it hasn't disappointed.

Is it bad that I completely understand this character's morbid curiosity toward trying heroin? Also, I just realized the main character's name hasn't been mentioned once yet. I'm sure that's intentional. I'll likely finish this one today. I find myself being drawn toward more novella length stories than fell length novels.
