Oh so this is surreal. I might be too tired for surreal this evening. Hmm.

So far, so melodramatic. I did not expect to be smacked in the face with spooky stuff immediately, but here we are. With the creepy stuff.

Who are these people? Why are there so many of them? I feel like I was lulled into a false sense of poeticism by reading the opening of Adam Bede. I hope I like this more soon

It's a little better, though the perspective-switching is still unclear, and lots of character names to remember

"He heard someone swear and stab out in the darkness at some flailing thing." Two of those things are visual and it's implied that the character cannot see what's happening in the shadow. The author seems to have a problem differentiating close third person and an omnipotent narrator. This sort of thing is confusing to read.

Not promising thus far. The transition from one event to another is unclear and no sense of emotional depth to character reactions. Hoping it will improve
