I don’t really feel connected to the characters (especially Alon who is the POV, which isn’t fab) BUT I love me some southeast Asian horror and I’m enjoying it even if it’s not super spooky. It’s a chill summer read

Reading spooky things from somewhere in maritime SEA is always a good time 🫶

Riley Black’s depiction of the slow violence of near-apocalypse is so powerful. I can already recommend this book to casual readers. It’s an engaging and jargon-free journey through the fall of the dinosaurs and the ascent of mammals, and honours the loss of the extinct species as much as the resilience of the survivors (to whom we, of course, owe the evolution of our own species).

I’m actually not ready to read about what happened after the impact oh god oh heck

A poetic ode to the former custodians of our ancient planet—more elegiac nature doco than scientific treatise, and perhaps stronger for it. Black paints a picture of life and death with a beautiful framing emphasising the resilience of life in the face of the uncontrollable whims of the cosmos.

What a strange and lyrical (if somewhat affected) story. Eager to read on. It’s the kind of thing that captures me now but that I know would have swept me up as a child. The 20th century references add to the oddness I think—talk of orbits and such amid the echoes of forgotten tales of lords and men in untended fields.

Conceptually terrific, technically unpolished. Struggling with engagement because of the latter but sticking with it for the creative remix.

Generally enjoying this for what it is but
1. Could really do with tighter editing—the blow by blow account is a bit disordered and some of this really feels like scattered thoughts
2. I feel like a lot of it is quite vague in the analysis/recommendations; the latter I can understand omission of as this is more reflective, but the analysis feels kinda shallow

Small thing I noticed—the food. All the luscious Capitol menus we were shown in the original trilogy replaced by bacon sandwiches like damn.

Snow is so complex, like he has emotions but he is so calculating. All his reactions are geared inward rather than outward. Pure narcissism. Very cool and subtle character study. Glad the pace is picking up too.
