I'm hating the male lead so far. Such a wimpy guy. He has no agency and even less personality.

I have never read a book with as much lore per page as this one. Things that should have been explained earlier show up very late, and the first chapter was so cringe I skipped it half way thru. Whoever thought it was a good idea to have the characters speak french and russian was drunk that day.

este libro me esta dando esta dando stress post traumatico de cuando iba a la iglesia. Todo suena tan vacio. Ni siquiera tratando de reinterpretarlo bajo una mirada metafisica esta ayudando. It's reallt sad being a christian

The events of the story are pretty spooky but the narration is not very good. Several aspects detract from the story, firts of all the fact that every kid that's not Craig acts and talks like an adults and second (and this is minor but it still bugged me), is he speaking in deutch or in english? Did he learn deutch before moving to Germany or is everyone in Germany using perfect american English to talk to him?

Had this been my first writing craft book I would have devoured it in like a day or two. But I've read so many of them that nothing here is new to me, there was nothing particularly inspiring or motivational about it, didn't gave me any "a-ha!" moments. It was just okay. That's the greatest compliment I can give it.

no estaba esperando tantos versiculos biblicos y tantas referencias religiosas. En ningun lado del blurb dice que es un libro espiritual. Supongo que es algo cultural, pero a la vez siempre me molesta cuando busco un libro sobre algo y termina siendo algo mas. Yo queria un libro de productividad, no un sermon.

This isn't doing it for me. I thought Levi was supposed to be the stoic character, quiet and misteriou, but his just another horny wisecracking idiot who only cares cares about one thing.. June is also a disappointment, the blurb made me think she was a force of nature, ever changing, unreadeable and yet alluring, but...she's another horney wisecracking idiot who only cares about one thing.

Oh no...not present tense on first POV...that's a red flag for me.

Do you thing Skye kind of hires ghost writers for her books? she sounds so diferent from one book to the next. Also, I don't get why she insists on writing from the "heroine's" POV, she's always sucked at writing female leads.

I'm not getting anything out of this book. Bunch of mentions of people I don't know about, the comentary rarely helps only providing alternative translations, and his "wisdom" doesn't do anything for me: "Respect your parents", "follow the rites", "be a gentleman", all carried to the very extreme are not even allow to question your parents upto 3 years after their death. Why was this even turned into a religion?

Can you like a book for the story alone and dislike everything else about it? The story intrigues me but I don't like the prose, I don't like the way they talk, I don't like Palmer, in fact, I am convinced this book would be a lot better had Theodosia been the main character and we stayed in her POV at all times. I'm getting close to dnf'ing but I'll press on for a bit more to see where the story goes

Lately I've been reflecting on what makes a good book; Why is this story in a few pages already better than every other YA I've read? I think the answer is: because the author is not a try-hard. She's telling us Mara's story without trying to make Mara a victim or a badass from the get go. I apppreciate that.
The omnicient narrator also helps, I'm over the first person POV in YA. I hope this book does not disapoint.

this book is a slow burn for sure, but when it gets good, it gets good. I only wished they stop talking in that stupid ancient english with the thee and the thoust. They are supposed to be a tribe of arabic speaking barbarians, why the formality?

Okay but why did the author felt the need to spoil the whole story line in the preface? Not only did he revealed pretty much the whole plot, he felt the need to add an extra note to clarify that the character who is supposed to be a genius is actually an idiot. Why tho? just let me read the book and figure it out by myself
