I agree largely with the thoughts of a previous reader that Moyn presents a paradox: by trying to make war more “humane”, we may extend the duration of conflicts and thereby inflict more death and destruction.

This is not light reading but Moyn does a good job of describing historical events in warfare and the laws of war.

This met with great controversy in our book club. I found it to be a good read but not a masterpiece. Parts seemed contrived. The plot drove the reader along. There were occasional well described naturalist writing. I would give it a C+were it not for some surprising twists of llot along the way whoch would raise it to a B- or maybe B.

I attended a lecture by the authors and read a part of the book. It is a fascinating parallel between where our country is now in 2020 and where it was in 1900. Billionaires controlled the economy and were glorified in mass media. Riugged individualism was confronted with comunitarioan movement.
