Dang! Kate Quinn is a master storyteller.

Absolutely lovely historical fiction. I especially appreciated the Note to the Reader at the end.

When this book became available fe the library today, I put all other books on hold to dig right in. Within the first 10 minutes, I’m reacquainted with Flavia, Undine, Dogger and Mrs. Mullet. I’m settling back into my happy place. ☺️

DNF: I made it through the first 4 chapters and was bored. I felt I knew exactly how this was gonna play out. Hopefully others find joy in this book while I move on.

I’m depressed listening to this and debate with myself daily whether I want to finish. Ugh.

Rolling my eyes, debating whether to finish. Too much sex, too much macho-tough guy…oh brother. I’m waiting for the unique characters on the “team” to be more deeply developed.

I’m beginning this just as the sad news of Taylor Hawkins’ death was announced. 😢

Oh dear, I'm going to have to do some research to figure out the "philosophical depth" and nuance in this book. It's times like this where I miss book club and/or literature class.

Oh dear. I like Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin but I’m lost when the book goes into details of the ship.

Page 154: “We have grown accustomed to think that loving as God does is hard. We think it’s about moral strain and obligation. We presume it requires a spiritual muscularity of which we are not capable, a layering of burden on top of sacrifice, with a side of guilt. (But it was love, after all, that made the cross salvific, not the sheer torture of it.)”

Page 67: “Here is what we seek: a compassion that can stand in awe at what poor people have to carry rather than stand in judgement at how they carry it.”

Page 38: “God, I guess, is more expansive than every image we think rhymes with God. How much greater is the God we have than the one we think we have.”
