the skiing story felt like the author was trying too hard. m&m story was much better.

selasi is gooooood. i guess i'm biased towards authors who actually Use Their Words - why write, otherwise? go into screenplays if you just want to tell a story. (maybe that's a bit mean but COME ON.)

puchner's premise was way too familiar for me to feel engaged but there's some terrific lines; saunders is, of course, a master

found otsuka unreadable, pearlman fab, and pneuman also good save for the unnecessary sex scene (i am down with sex scenes but this one just felt like it was trying too hard to be a sex!!!! scene!!!!)

don't see the appeal of alice munro. plot&characters felt very familiar and prose was just serviceable. is there something i'm missing? volcano story that followed it was great, though.

"north country" was good, "the other place" i guess, and "navigators." i remember "miracle polish" from the new yorker and it still doesn't really work for me.

so far the anne frank one is the best, imo. the others are good ideas with subpar execution.

davies keeps indulging in my biggest historical-writing peeve: ascribing specific thoughts/emotions to people without any evidence. dunno if i'll finish this.
