Respectfully why the hell is she pen palls with Tom Hanks casually? What is this adding? Is this a prolonged you've got mail joke?

After The Tainted Cup came out of left field and became one of my top books of 2024, I have been waiting patiently for this to arrive (via Libby). I am excited, but am hesitant due to the age-old issues that often arise when a male author is writing a young woman.
We shall see, folks.

I am loving this! The setting, the writing style, the humor? My expectations were honestly quite low and I have been humbled.

I love reading books about flawed women, but the dynamic between the main character and her sister

Not a huge fan of the two person POV, but there are ornithologist side characters so I need to keep at it 🦅🦅

I knew from the description that I would love this book. By page 30, I know that it will be one of my favorites. Erdrich is a marvel.

The ~she's not like other girl~ counter has hit TWO! This one in the form of ... "other girls were tedious."

If it was published a long time ago I’d be a bit more understanding. But 2020? Yeeeesh.

Okay ... I would be lying if I didn't say that the first-person writing style didn't TOTALLY throw me off. I am super excited about the premise of the book, but don't know if the style will work for me.

When I cracked this book open, I did not think that I would be cackling at the dialogue and at the actions of the characters - Heyer's descriptions and ability to capture the (dare I say, slightly chaotic) dynamic of the siblings is a joy to read. Very pleasantly surprised and excited to explore my first Georgette Heyer book :)

As someone who was toughened by the blustery winters of the Midwest and sat eating my great grandma’s lefse while looking out at the farm’s snow drifts, I can say that this book is giving me a surprising amount of comfort as I settle into a new city.
Excited to see where this goes!

I haven’t read much fantasy since I was a child and I am so happy that I picked this up. I feel completely immersed in this tale and can’t wait to see what is explored. Truly feeling blown away.
