Did not finish - got tired of the journal style of writing.

In addition to the one I already mentioned I recommend the following poems from this book: Moon Song, Some Nights, What I Meant, What My Girlfriends Teach Me, and What Kind of Man. I loved how Moon Song captures the or/and aspects of life and leans heavily on the “and.” What Kind of Man is not what you think - it’s not a feminist diatribe but rather the gentleness of some men - bits of it described my dad.

I really enjoyed this - the pacing was good. The writing was clear and descriptive without being overly so. The tone seemed to really fit the period of life in America. Definitely recommend!

Audiobook: there is so much dramatic tension it’s hard to stop listening!

Favorite poem so far - My Friend Bethany Rages at the News. Each stanza is a strong commentary on our world.

I highly recommend the audio version of this book.

I have mixed feelings about the endings of various story arcs but overall I enjoyed listening to it. It definitely took my mind off the day-to-day struggles of 2025.

Audio version good for listening during yard or housework. 😆I am determined to finish this book but for a “thriller” it is surprising how often it is predictable. The chapter I’m listening to now is so ridiculous in its descriptions that I laughed out loud.

There is a lot to keep track of in the opening chapters - I had to take notes!

While I’m lucky not to be a PhD student balancing teaching, grading, and pursuing a degree, the descriptions of academic life and the rhythm of life as a professor is spot on. I keep wanting to flag pages as reminders of why my downtime looks the way it does!
