This book, while definitely flawed, is not quite as meritless as people have made it out to be.

Going all the way back to 1969 with this one. Plenty of stuff here that has not aged well, but there are a lot of details I'm seeing for the first time. I'm curious if they were debunked or just forgotten.

Having just finished a long biography on James VI, I am fairly confident that the claim he did nothing to try to stop his mother’s execution is false.

This title of this book is a misnomer. It’s basically a straightforward biography.

Tidewater: A Novel of Pocahontas and the Jamestown Colony
Pocahontas’ “sacrifice” is wearing stuffy clothing and marrying a dreamy guy who adores her. Okay, dear. Whatever you say. . .

Hmm first major historical change: Ratcliffe goes back to England instead of meeting a grisly death in Virginia. Curious decision.

I wouldn’t call this an easy read, but it does provide a lot of key context missing from other books.

Most of this book is just regaling anecdotes like “staffers for X say he acted like an abusive jerk,” followed by “X says he has no recollection of said event.”
