addictive!
is this litterature or entertainment ?

At least there is some Meta in it, when you are not sure if you are reading the novel the author is writing that he is writing. And the count down chapters, nice touch. I guess it must have been used before, it is just to simple that no one thought about it before, but I never saw it myself anywhere. Cool tricks this Joël Dicker has up his sleeve, very cool indeed.

How I LOVE Elena Ferrante.

I don't know what it is, but she draws me in with such a force, it is as if life itself is being made visible to me in all it's truths, all the truths one can not see while in the midst of his/her own life, but when I read her novels, it is as if the truth about human condition and our struggle is laid bare ! and somehow it is not totally depressing ! I only have 2 more novels to go :(

I always enjoy audiobooks by Backman, and especially the Beartown cycle. This time however, I get irritated from time to time by the typical "fooled you" tricks the author so much loves, by making you think a character will die or get very injured, and then promptly kills off another character.
Too much dark-premonition-per-page density, for my taste. still enjoyable.

I am in the middle in the second part. The first part was stronger, with more characters, more color, more Strangeness to capture my attention. I am losing a bit the interest a Natsuko's struggles with her wishes for motherhood and endeavors to write do not interest me as much as her sisters and niece's experiences and thoughts.
The structure of part 1 was also much more interesting with Midoriko's diary entries.

I was a bit frustrated with the linearity of the book. I find it sometimes not very captivating, just repetitive, even though the images and descriptions are striking. However after reflection, I do think this setup reflects very well the life of a child like Shuggie... for him it also was a linear drag that just kept going thu the same disappointing , painful experiences, where he could not break away from.

Only few chapters are centered on Shuggie, most of the novel so far should have the title Agnes Bain, as poor Shuggie is almost never protagonist, he is victim or bystander, who does his best to protect his mother. What resources this little kid had, such kindness and courage, apparently innate as he is rarely experiencing demonstrations of these values. The story is more hopeless than I expected from reviews.

TOM HANKS is reading the audiobook. Well, he is great doing that. Not a suprise I guess. I am really enjoying listening to it, and although the story is engaging, I think his performance is contributing immensely too.
