Yeah, so she channels the god and kills The Big Bad in just the nick of time to save herself because The Big Bad suffers from "choosing to choke enemies when they are a huge threat and he has the advantage of a weapon"
c'mon man...

A little skeptical at this point. The book is progressing rapidly- we've been introduced to shamanism and now they are in a war in like 50 pages. Rin is amazing at combat- martial arts training doesn't really teach you how to fight with a sword though, right?

The start was strong but I'm seriously questioning a lot of the coincidences as just being too convienient. Doesn't seem like great writing.

Also, the book's world is strange and also hard to accept - mid sized towns with secret anti-EO police? Just how many of these people are there? You can't convince me that literal superpowers would go unnoticed in todays age.

One of the most intense chases I have read in a while. Genuine suspense.

Pretty slow at first. Has some interesting moments. The part with Pyrates is terrifying and palpable when he senses Simon in the storage room. I can definetly see some influences in Game of Thrones: the Sithi = children of forest, the red comet, good kings followed by bad heirs.

Interesting so far.... BUT why does this book fall so badly into the trap of "made up swear words to replace a direct copy of an english curse word"

ie "rusting earth" -> "f***** hell"
Its such a dumb and obvious attempt at worldbuilding and being immersive. if you are going to make up new curses at least make them functionally different or mean something different.

Characters are thin. Also seems kind of sexist, which I don't throw arouns very often. Seems like the author himself, not the world of the author.

Also we don't have a problem or plot yet, its literally just bits of charqcters lives but its too thin to be emotionally invested in any of them so I'm wondering if I will continue much more.

Very intriguing so far. There is this aura of mystery and grandeur surrounding the guardships. Some characters leave a little to be desired but we will see how that develops.

This world feels lived in and like it has history, movement, and so much below the surface, but the way Cook leaves so much to the imagination is great. Implication rather than exposition.

Skimmed the last 90 pages. Skips and jumps in time wildly, then plot dumps in the end. A bunch of individually interesting plot elements get skipped over and explained away in reverse. Yawn.

Very boring plot off of the bat. The main hook is actually fairly uncreative for something that relies on it. I can already see the cliched, stereotypical characters forming. Maybe I need to give it more time, maybe I will come back, but as of now it bores me.

This book was incredibly interesting to begin with. I quit reading it once I realized that is has no overarching story. It is like a literal tale of someones life. Also, the fact that it has so much hidden meaning in it is actually a turn-off for me. I don't particularly want to study a book of fiction as much as enjoy it. Some books can do both, this one seems written to be "a book that has hidden meaning".

The writing style was too hard for me to follow. Inventive/creative but just not for me. Too disjointed and intentionally so.

Interesting but showing it's age. More of a greek tragedy meets Brothers Grimm meets Norse folklore.

I will say comparisons to LotR or Narnia are fairly weak. This book, in my opinion, has so far paled in comparison to those works. The races contained within seem almost uninspired in comparison. Tolkein took things and made them his own, re-designed them, gave them character and life. TBS is lacking in soul atm.
