Jacque is on page 26 of 236 of Not Like Yesterday (Ilse Beck #3)
A variation of “wince” is used 65 times in this book. 19 times in the first 25 pages. Lord give me patience.

I knew from the first book in the series that the writing could use improvement and Ilse can be an irritating character. I’m only 25 pages into this book and she’s winced at least six times. Variations of wince have been used enough times in 25 pages to last the entire book. And now I’M wincing! I’m interested in the storyline, though, so I’ll keep reading.

Such a horrible historical true crime story! I can’t even imaging being starved literally to death.

Jacque is on page 105 of 479 of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women
Its hard to read about the suffering of these women and the complete disregard for their health. I am confused by the conflicting statements that Radium Dials wasn’t as concerned about wasting the paint as ISCR, with examples given. But then it’s stated that the girls couldn’t use water or cloths on the brushes because it wasted too much paint.

I’m really disappointed on how annoying Leah is in this book. She is supposed to be this smart woman who knows how to survive, but she’s constantly questioning herself. She knows immediately what is going on but keeps talking herself into it being something different and safer. If she were really that smart and trying to keep herself alive, she would be way more likely to assume the worst and hope for the best.

I’m disappointed at how annoying Leah is made to be. She’s supposed to be this smart woman who knows how to shoot, fly, survive. But it takes her forever to catch on to things that type of woman should think of right away. Often doubting her first thoughts that are usually correct.

Already struggling with this because 1 out of 4 is 25% and 4 out of 10 is 40%. So this section doesn’t make sense: “At the turn of the century almost one out of every four families owned their own home. Today, only four out of ten homes are owner-occupied...”

I can’t finish this book. It should come with extreme warnings. I feel disgusted with myself for as far as I did read. I spent an hour feeling complete despair and horror at so many aspects of this book that have happened and continue to happen.
