An exceptionally compelling story and narrator. I’ve enjoyed some great stories in recent months, but this one makes me want to drop everything so I can keep reading!

Great writing; I see the appeal, but it never captured me. Felt almost academic. Nothing wrong with that but I wanted something more engaging.

Burke’s series was highly recommended by two avid readers I respect. Left me flatter than flat. Glad I gave it a shot. Quitting it was a relief.

The little I’ve read is inspirational. For me, this is a book to read in bits, not all at once.

Superb collection of essays that I revisit periodically.

Wonderfully written. A sprawling look at contemporary US economy & society through the lens of multiple characters living and working in LA. For me, the multiple storylines were too disjointed to form a satisfying narrative. Haven’t ruled out revisiting in the future. Lot of passionate fans of the book.

Wonderfully written. Frey seems to capture something important about this era in US society, especially the impact on ordinary people of vast economic inequality and the related dislocation. I’d like to have read the book, but I stopped b/c reading it felt too much like work.

Utterly compelling. Heartbreaking, beautiful and based on thorough historical research. Reminiscent of The Tatooist of Auschwitz & other stories of heroism.

Remarkable combination of US history & contemporary political economy. Thought-provoking, reads more like nonfiction so far - dry & fascinating. Glad I started it. Not sure I’ll read all 510 pages. If I do, it may be to supplement what I’m reading for enjoyment.
