This was good and I’m glad that I read it but also I’m glad I can be out of his mind now

Interesting. In the afterward Mark says that in the modern day he’d probably be diagnosed as manic depressive (bipolar) rather than schizophrenic which makes more sense. it was a bit stressful reading this, at least before bed. There were also a couple specific paragraphs that were very surprising+disturbing but things moved on really quickly and I’m still ??? Like what was that

Also now realising that there was little to no misogyny in this book - a rare win for PKD. There was one mention of melon-y breasts but I think it kind of made sense in context. Or maybe I’m too used to PKD haha

Read most of this on the plane, last 20% on my phone on the train. Things got pretty exciting after XXX’s death. Became a real page turner - I didn’t want to put it down

Really really enjoyed this, although I’m not sure that I understood it all. PKD always delivers and I think this was exactly what I was in the mood for

The vug in this book cover is so different from how I imagined them. I’m pretty sure what I’m imagining is a character from Star Wars. Might draw it just to satisfy myself

I feel like the story changed directions maybe 10 times - each change more interesting

Wooohooo finally finished it. I think I liked it in the beginning but at some point it started to drag. And then I generally wouldn’t feel like picking this back up or reading for very long. I think I kinda got sick of all the nice prose and just wanted some brain off reading idk. I feel like this is a me thing rather than the books fault. Defs liked it more than the other JW book at least

Glad it ended this way

I feel like it lacked the special sauce I’m drawn to in chandlers books. Not enough of his fun prose and quips. The story was easier to follow, more contained, and more developed - sure. But I don’t go to him for his stories.

The murderer was p predictable with how Chandler likes to do things. I was surprised by a little twist at the end. I didn’t expect that at all

I was rlly excited for this book. Meh

The long goodbye is fitting bc it felt like it took forever for this book to end. I kept thinking okay yep that was probs the last chapter, then turned the page and there was another.

So many say this is the best Philip Marlowe book, even Raymond Chandler was proudest of the long goodbye. But idk I think I’d rank this middle of the pack out of all his books. Maybe it’s me and my mood rn idk.

Finished this the other day. Still not totally sure what I think 😅. I think I spaced out my reading sessions too much maybe? I feel like I need to read an analysis or st to learn why this is considered a classic. Changed translations partway through tho which I think was a good call. Apparently the American translation captured the vibes of the original book better

Picked a short one for my April/1940s book bc the months almost over and I don’t have much time 😅 this has been on my list for ages tho

Putting this on pause until other ppl are also reading this (our book club book). When I finish too early before everyone else - by the time we meet to discuss the book it’s been too long and I’ve forgotten too much.

I think I’ll probably need to reread this one day where I’m less sleepy so I can fully appreciate it. Still enjoyable despite sleepiness though (unlike to the lighthouse)

Was a bit spoiled for some big parts, which may have dulled the reading experience a little. I watched the end of the movie years ago. when I started this book I thought I’d forgotten it all. But then as I continued reading I remembered a lot of the bigger reveals that would be coming up and was like aaa whoopsie

Liked it. This was meant to be my March 1930s book - but I’ve only finished it halfway into April haha. I’ve been so sleepy most nights recently that I haven’t been able to read very much at a time.

Really well written. Enjoyed it a lot more after the big reveal (in the middle?). Feels quite modern to me

I’m sorry I think I was too sleepy to appreciate this book. Maybe in 30 years I’ll read it again and be like wow omg amazing what a classic but this time I rlly struggled to follow along and care about the characters

Started reading this last night but didn’t absorb any of it. I have no idea what’s going on. Only thing I got is l that everyone thinks Mr tansley is boring.

I vaguely remember feeling similar when starting Mrs dalloway, and I ended up liking it. So hopefully it (/ my reading ability) gets better

I feel like I have more to say but idk how to write it haha. I liked the exploration of Oural’s character. Her fighting and her competence as Queen surprised me (considering the time it was written, and I’d thought c.s Lewis was more conservative). Part two as an amendment was rlly cool and fun. Would probs be keen to reread it one day

Really really liked this!! Especially towards the end. Highlighted so many passages. When I started I was like ehh is this really C.S Lewis’s greatest novel but on finishing I can believe it (though this is the only book of his I’ve read). Capital V Great.

Glad I picked it up. The story of eres and psyche was my fave out of Stephen Fry’s mythos.

Wondering how spoiled I am for this.

I watched the last scene of the tv show some years ago (after seeing it talked abt on YouTube). I thiiink it revealed who the killer was. But also I’m not sure if the tv show and the book were aligned bc that character doesn’t seem to exist in this (yet at least). I’d prefer to not be spoiled so I hope the ending is different haha
