I want to be sucked in by the story at this point, but no such luck so far. The pacing is still slow, and maybe I should be reading this on a cold winter day (instead of outside in 90 some degree heat) to help get into the book’s chilly atmosphere.

This has all the elements of a good ghost story, but the pacing feels soooo slooooow.... 😣

Right now, this book reminds me so much of HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson—a sentient house, a “haunted” nursery, a professor, troubled/disturbed mothers, telekinesis (?), unclear boundaries between the real and the imagined, people waiting for “something” to happen...

Great opening lines to introduce readers to our reliable narrator: “Call me crazy. I see ghosts. OK, the truth is I no longer see ghosts. How quickly I’ve lost your trust. We’ve gotten off on the wrong foot, so let me back up.”

What a great description: “The old brick was mellowed with age and warmed from centuries of river light, the windows made from wavy cockled glass with tiny bubbles in it that held the light like good champagne.”
