Right now, this book reminds me so much of HILL HOUSE by Shirley Jackson—a sentient house, a “haunted” nursery, a professor, troubled/disturbed mothers, telekinesis (?), unclear boundaries between the real and the imagined, people waiting for “something” to happen...

What a great description: “The old brick was mellowed with age and warmed from centuries of river light, the windows made from wavy cockled glass with tiny bubbles in it that held the light like good champagne.”
