not super jiving with the writing style, but i’m very interested in the story itself

piss book.

can these people please get a fucking grip. it’s the same shit over and over and over and over and over

this is fucking great so far and is making me want to reread axiom’s end and that whole series. apparently i have a fondness for series about relationships between humans and extraterrestrial species and their complicated politics and how they make human politics and culture look so stupid

how the actual fuck did octavia butler predict “MAGA”? like not a representation of MAGA, but she wrote the actual words “make america great again” as coming from the mouth of a white, christian nationalist, fascist president

characters in fiction books continue to make decisions that frustrate me to no end. this books is good but it’s so fucking annoying that it overrides how good it is

i’ve only read the introduction and i’m already pissed off

i already love this and i hope that doesn’t change

that was one of the most captivating opening stories for a collection that i have ever read

this is fantastic so far

guys that book i just dnf’ed…. super interesting premise and the author is clearly insanely knowledgeable about the history but he is also completely unbearable as a narrator 😭 and made more than a few comments in the first 2 chapters that made me pause in a bad way. like saying he thinks the term queer is vague and annoying. i could just tell i wasn’t gonna get what i wanted to get from it.

how are you going to be pro-palestine but anti-communist 🤨

books don’t elicit visceral emotional responses from me very often (laughing, crying, etc) but i have laughed multiple times now. they are all the worst fucking people in the world

this book is unhinged….. i am enjoying it

this book has referenced at least 4 other books i’ve read this year and it is not saying anything more clearly or drawing connections those books didn’t. it’s not even summarizing or synthesizing the other books’ ideas particularly well. carr’s ideas are mostly half baked with neoliberal to moderate ideological leanings that i find reductive.

“haunted by its own abuse of children, the church externalizes the origin of child abuse attributing it to sexual and gender minorities […] it commits a moral error of gross proportion by projecting and externalizing the specter of its own abusive history onto sexual and gender minorities as a way of making others responsible for its own crimes.” i’m at chapter 4 now but this quote is from chapter 2!!

this is lovely

it’s undoubtedly good but i’m also a little bit too dumb for it. but the chapter about meditation is EXACTLY how i have always felt about the practice too. i had a professor for a (behavioral?) psych class who spent the entire semester ignoring material conditions of any kind and instead espoused loving kindness meditation as a cure all and i went OFF in her review at the end of the class. very validating
