actually i don’t think this has fully been thought through (shockingly) because how does this interface with the whole “first born nobles are cursed and secondborns are blessed with magic” the logic of which still does not really make sense even after the crash course we just had

the concept of same sex relationships being something that is relatively recently acceptable but older generations are more old fashioned and set in their ways and disapproving… is so interesting… like did this fantasy country just have a whole queer rights movement in the past 30 years or so? (now THAT is a novel concept i can get behind lol)

this dog is growing like supernaturally fast but cerise seems to think it is totally unremarkable which is. weird. i will bet $100 this dog is secretly part unicorn or something

never heard of anyone else ever reading this one but the cover reminded me of that one twelfth night image with anne hathaway, you know the one, which very much caught my attention lol

lol no this is not actually very good (love the scene where they’re like “how would we break the curse? oh let’s immediately realise and then crack the code in this journal left behind by the previous Seer, great we have all the answers right away, let’s go tomorrow” lmao) but you know what it is? sufficiently engaging to keep me entertained

hopefully this is the book that brings me back
from this reading slump (that being said i did just see it has a very mid average rating… nevertheless we persevere)

for a book with this premise it is surprisingly slow paced and not very suspenseful… even when stuff happens that is like Oh No in terms of plot, i don’t feel particularly concerned for these characters. going to need things to get really creepy and weird ASAP

this one is very intriguing, just hasn’t managed to fully suck me in yet but i’m keen for things to get weird and creepy

what do you meannnnnn the wind god dropped kissen off at the wrong city so she’s not going to reunite with the others and get the show back on the road… what a SCAM
the reviews are saying this one does pick up a bit about 2/3 of the way through so i am really hoping that is true

“sophie why don’t you simply stop reading” i don’t know i feel committed to continue after taking a year to get back into this series and being so dedicated to reread Godkiller (and i maintain that Godkiller is really good so what the hell happened here!!!)

not to come back on here and rant again but i couldn’t even summarise the previous 200 pages of what i’ve read. like i could not tell you what is really happening or why it is happening. feels a bit like when the stormlight archive books became a bit too long and unwieldy for me to keep track of events and character arcs but this is 200 pages!!!

problem with this one I think is that all the perspectives are just so disjointed, I have no idea what is the big picture we’re working towards and even more I have barely any idea of what these individual characters’ goals are, let alone how they’re going to weave together… hopefully kissen is finally about to reunite with the others though and something can actually HAPPEN and hopefully it makes sense too

mildly struggling with this one i must admit

yeah i don't know what it is about this book that makes me have like a mental barricade around reading it, maybe second book syndrome, maybe "fantasy series starts off with a really cool concept but inevitably becomes About War" syndrome
like it's FINE but definitely not capturing me like reading godkiller for the first time

attempt 2!!! determined to wrap up this trilogy by the end of the year!!! finally got my hands on a physical copy which i do think will help

cameron (having the ring with EELS engraved in it) “guess i’ll NEVER KNOW who my father is then!!!!!”
as if he couldn’t even try looking back through the high school memorabilia that simon has kept a hold of to find a match
mind you this is the character who keeps making sure to remind the readers how SMART he is

like “oh we’ve discovered the name of the girl erik was seeing at the time he mysteriously died and oh it’s the same surname as this guy cameron who is here looking for his mystery dad. and look cameron is 30 and erik disappeared 30 years ago. hey do you think erik might have been cameron’s dad and therefore tova is his grandmother”
“hmm… nah probably not”

why the hell would simon brinks give cameron the run around for like 3 months if he knew exactly who he is… makes absolutely no damn sense. none of these characters act like real people because if they did there would be no plot

more miscommunication than a romance novel 3rd act breakup

not to be mean but i’ve realised this book has a particularly amateurish writing style … mmhm anyway

can i just say at this point the octopus feels tangential to the story and not really a core focus ... mildly disappointing and misleading imo
anyway so i guess tova is cameron's grandmother and she's rich so that works out really nicely for him to solve all his problems

this fits into the “lessons in chemistry” category in my brain (very popular mainstream semi literary/general fiction novel that i think probably isn’t REALLY my thing but i’m reading it because my mum loved it and made me take a copy) and tbf “lessons in chemistry” was enjoyable enough so this one i think should be good at least

…i think is touching me more than it probably did last time since the deaths of a few elderly family members and i can feel this wistful longing that i wish i could have known them when they were younger and known them fully

like the tiny detail of the smurf hand glued to the gearstick being so impactful for june because it’s a part of finn that shes never seen before, and then her desperation to hear toby’s stories about finn because she is learning these sides of him that shes never known before…

i just love the detail that CRB writes into this story, these tiny sensory touches that make everything feel more alive and real. and she also captures the sadness and loneliness of being a certain kind of teenage girl in a way that is so heart achingly real. (i think the loneliness of being a teenage girl is something that never really leaves you, how does this resonate with me still so deeply in my mid 20s?)

whenever fae books do time dilation as a concept/lore element/plot device it makes me soooooo happy :)))))
