Has good insight and raises a lot of good questions, but I sometimes get the sense James is trying to make these women's stories relatable and inspirational at the cost of misunderstanding their actual stories. Strange assertions and assumptions are especially remarkable (as far as I've got so far) in Tamar's story; and the introduction to Esther's story has me concerned it will take the same route.

In the middle of EVERY CHAPTER: we interrupt the narrative to describe at least one character in excessive detail. A character who's been here since the beginning of the story. A character you no doubt already have a picture of in your head.

Now he looks at me. He says, very softly, “It’s too late for that, Puck.”

“What a strange, wonderful, repressed place this is.”

Jack thought, I am going to follow this child, to my death perhaps, but I am going to follow her, and be proud of the opportunity.

“Like ogres, the world has layers.”

And we’re off to an excellent start.
