Tension. I find myself reading a page then going to find a cup of water, over and over.

I might like this book much more than I had thought. So far, its realism on gender has been refreshing and the characters look vivid.

“But then I suppose I should be grateful. Some children are born with the face of a nine-day-wonder celebrity or their hair gene-crafted into unlikely textures and colours. Fashions change fast, but if it’s in your genetic code you have to live with it.”

I like this take on genetic engeneering.

"But its Mora and the children I feel for most – they worshipped him and it’ll hit them hard."

In that sort of matriarchal society? and the constant insulting? If you say so...

This is an absolutely good book. I've simply not yet had the chance to read a noveI disagree with this much.

"He served a dark and terrible goddess this stranger who had come to them." Is it just my eyes or is this sentence missing a comma? The writing is beautiful, but this particular type of comma is always omitted by the author. A style?

"...the kind who would cheerfully use women..."

It's ironic Avilon would think that of another man. Shemille and that other slave girl were much the same, no? I assume the differentiation here is between raping someone and between having sex with them when someone orders them to offer.

“Let me through,” he appealed. “My wife is having a baby – our first child.”

No one stopped to consider why that should be any reason to let him into the plaza, the crowd just drew apart as if by magic and helpful hands guided him to the front whilst congratulations and good wishes were offered.

that made me giggle.

I hope her almost getting raped was not meant to make her more likable. I wouldn't wish torture or rape on a character, but I do prefer to see her killed off or at least punched very hard and then forgotten.

"Jariq could still recall with vivid clarity the tight look of angry defeat which her beautiful face had worn when he had visited her with the fruits of Durban’s labours."

Good.

I find Avilon's enjoyment of sex-slaves strange. He seems to hate everything else about the label "slave".

good, good.

I particularly dislike content creators treating gender as if it were a character trait. This work started with a poor misunderstood toughened lass fighting the petty odds and a manly man, disappointing me.

Now I'm happy.

I saw a woman coldly crushing a man's a compassion and heard in my mind, "Hell hath no fury like a man scorned."

May my hopes come true, and may this novel run deep.

Avilon's meditation inspired me to meditate for about half an hour. It's been a while since I did mental meditations.

Such a good book. I am rather surprised by the amount of exposition, but it is quite well done.

I am unable to run through this book. I find each sentence too enjoyable. This all started with Martyn Stanley's recommendation for a nonfiction by this author.
