“As a prosecutor, my work was protecting vulnerable people” - feels like a dangling modifier that’s all too common these days, but I can’t figure it out logically.

[Tone policing is ]when someone (usually a privileged person) in a conversation about oppression shifts the conversation from the oppression being discussed to the way it is being discussed. Tone policing prioritizes the comfort of the [person with more influence and protection] in the situation over the oppression of the disadvantaged person.

And all at once Bridie is filled with the hot rage that comes over any sane woman who rails against her market price, or the damnable fact that there is a market price in the first place. She glares into the mirror.

"If your wife, your brother, or God forbid, your child dies. It leaves a big hole in your life. It's much better not to pretend there's no hole. Not to try to, what do they say nowadays, get over it."

In fact, I believe it was evidence of remarkable recovery that he was able to find interest in other things (i.e. exterminating snakes, helping neighbours) after the traumas of his life. Good on him.

Some things in this world just ain't meant to be, not in the times we want'em to, and the heart has to hold it in this world as remembrance, a promise for the world that's to come. There's a prize at the end of all of it, but still, that's a heavy load to bear."

all things heaven sent ain't meant to be enjoyed in this world. [...]For the Captain took that news across the jibs and brung hisself back to Harpers Ferry knowing he was done in. He knowed he was gonna lose fighting for the Negro, on account of the Negro, and he brung hisself to it anyway, for he trusted in the Lord's word. That's strong stuff. I felt God in my heart for the first time at that moment.

I come to the understanding that maybe what was on the inside was more important, and that your outer covering didn't count so much as folks thought it did, colored or white, man or woman.

It ain't a clean proposition when you you declare a war on something, and not somebody

Indeed. Compare "war on terrorism" and "war on Iraq".

Indeed, the risk of self-care: you can provide for yourself, or you can not. Your master can provide for you, or your master can sell your children. You can have someone else care for you and yours, and accept your vulnerability under their power, or you can care for yourself, but accept your occasional failures.

Er. I'm not sure this word was used in this manner in those days.... Pixies, yes, but pixels? Also, "accidentally on purpose" earlier... Just how old is that expression?

The time they ask directly, and the Black slave tells them directly: its not just because they're white, its not generally because they're masters, but because they specifically sold her children.

And in that conversation, he sees her not as Black, not as slave, not as woman, but as mom, as parent - as he himself is a father. He sees her as same to himself. And he can't deal, and has the freedom to leave.
