Did... did the captain just read his mind? It was never stated WHAT he saw in the water yet the captain somehow knows. He has to be a mind reader. He should read MY mind right about now...

Speeding along in a truck but one character can push open the door and jump out? Really now...

Shards and spears of ice reflect the lantern light through the foot-long holes in the hull, but in the centre is something much more disturbing —blackness. Nothing. A hole in the ice. A tunnel.

I had to put this one down a bit before I cried. I didn't realize that I went from disliking this character to obviously loving them but well done Mr. Crouch; that's some of the most powerful emotions that I've ever felt while reading a book.

It was cold and faintly sweet, none of that metallic, sterilized tang of toilet water.

There was something in there, without a doubt, something terribly malignant. That's all that is said before moving on but that one sentence is damned powerful. Normally I'd be pissed off at the tease but Matheson pulls it off; my imagination says, "Oh hell no!", and I'm glad to be moving past.

Jessie just saw her daughter again and starts fussing at Dauphin for getting her so filthy. Reminds me of the old woman playing cards in Blake Crouch's The Last Town. An abbie breaks into her house and she starts scolding it for being rude! Gotta love a little humor mixed in.

When a diver was resurfacing and the pressure on them decreased, there was a risk of blacking out. That risk increased if they paused or exhaled. Carrie exhaled at the end of her ascent *facepalm*

At one hundred fifty meters, they reached the spreading seafloor. Unless Keene left something out, their dive would shatter the world record by 30 to 50 meters, depending on its classification. Someone call Guiness World Records!!

Paolo watched the seagulls circle and wheel and squawk for a moment. There are *NO* Gulls in Mauritius.

Seabirds squawked angrily overhead, *snip* one of them flew back up, clutching a wriggling fish in its talons, No, just no. There is no "seabird" there that catches fish that way; it's all about the bill for "seabirds".

“That rash is a particularly lovely color. It matches your eyes.” Most rashes from the bends disappear within hours but our girl here has one four days later. Ok. They apparently never turn blue or green like a bruise so that leaves only a handful of colors for the rash and her eyes. Red? Gray? Black? I'm confused! What's up with her red, gray or black eyes?!?

Carrie finished her seventh glass of water to keep herself from responding. *snip a paragraph of someone else talking* Carrie nearly spit her water out. “W-what?” Wait, I thought she already downed seven glasses of water or can that guy count? She's nearly spitting out her water after he finishes talking? What was she doing, holding it in her mouth?

Yet all you’ve ordered is a small bowl of fish soup, and a large pitcher of water. You’ve drank seven glasses.” She's chugged all this water and the reader never knew she was even drinking anything?!

A public transportation bus chortled down the street, belching exhaust. TIL: buses can chortle. Ok I get what he's writing but wow, this really nags at me.

At 25%, I suspected that this one would be too short. At 49%, I know it'll be too short. At least I won't have to wait long until book 2 is published this fall. Book 3, however, might be a while. :(

I usually detest it when someone posts a link to a blog to read a review in order to drive traffic there but apparently I was too chatty about the first story in this one.
