Rarely have I read a single book, let alone trilogy, whose imagination reached for the stars, then…kept going. Breathtaking in its scope, ideas, and expanding palette of characters and narrative threads, while somehow resolving most of them in the end.

I felt the best kind of loss: the delicious experience of inhabiting a singular story for the first time, and knowing there will never be a first time again.

I cannot speak authoritatively or confidently about either graphic novels or graphic memoirs, having read only assorted samplings of each. That disclaimer out of the way, this book is one of the best examples I’ve experienced of how a graphic approach can complement text; this mashup of ideas, memories, history, psychology, social commentary, and more is…moving, thoughtful, insightful, and sometimes beautiful.
