Scars on back? Fucking yawn. Jesus. Can’t we have something original for once? Romantasy has gotten so stale I hate it here. I was hoping book 2 did something different than the obvious.

This book is so predictable, it’s like I’ve read it a million times. At least give me something unique, Kate. Jesus. I can’t just go ga-ga for the romance like everyone else when the plot is so incredibly stale.

Going through all the books I read so far this year and ruthlessly adjusting the ratings makes me feel a type of powerful 😅

“Why don’t you die?” There was no point in being coy. She wanted to kill him; they both knew it.
His lips curved into an insincere smile. “Prior commitments, I’m afraid.”
Iykyk 😩😭

I’m trying to take things slow this time. If you’ve read the book twice, you’ll understand what I mean. You have to approach Act one differently on the second read.

Reading this for the 4th time this year. I can’t find another book to scratch this Alchemised itch. Might as well read it again. 😩

So I've tried two Meg Smitherman horror romance novellas: Fervor and Thurm
I'm obsessed with them.
Both have: seduction + dubious consent + dread + eroticism + control + surrender.

Vile & Virtue: The Beginning
This is nothing like anything I've ever read from Kathryn Ann Kingsley. It's so unique!
You can definitely see how much she's grown as a writer. I'm totally impressed.
One thing I would have liked is if the audiobook narrator was a woman, since the story is from a female POV. It's slightly distracting for me to hear a dude, so l'm using Speechify to rectify the disjointment.

Everything Is Tuberculosis: The History and Persistence of Our Deadliest Infection
I’m almost done with this book. A lot of the information I’m reading about tuberculosis is what I already know and what I would have found on Wikipedia. One of the biggest annoyances for me so far is that the book hardly focuses as much on Henry as it claims to. I hope this changes for the rest of the book. But we will see…

I’m disturbed by readers who rate books they haven’t finished. Imagine me rating The Sixth Sense after watching only 80% of it, completely missing the reveal that defines the film and made it a classic. That wouldn’t be an opinion, it would be dishonest. And lazy. And unfair, not just to the creator, but to the act of reading itself. This actively undermines what it means to engage with a work in good faith.

I spoke too soon. This book is dumb. Not because of the dark themes. But because the writing is so bad. The author seriously needs to look up more descriptions because she repeats the same handful of phrases over and over again.
Yet… the book is decilously addictive. So I’ll finish it. It’s basically kinky porn, and I can’t look away.

I was reading some reviews and saw that many people found the book dark, disturbing, and even rapey and gave it a one-star because of this. I mean the author warned you in the TW— what did you expect?
Is this your first foray into dark fantasy? And definitely not the PC dark fantasy that’s been in the market for the past few years.
This book is definitely disturbing, but common to the genre. And I like it!

Powerless (The Powerless Trilogy, #1)
This book is completely dumb and predictable. I have no idea why I’m still reading it. It's a blatant Hunger Games/Red Queen rip-off.
This is what I get for reading YA fantasy. I thought maybe the genre had improved in recent years, but clearly not.
Same tired formula.
Sigh.
But I’m finishing it anyway; why not.

I hate that we can't look at others' reading challenges. What's the point then? I love when I'm able to see what others are reading. Goodreads is supposed to be a community forum where we can share and interact with others, and not being able to interact with others' reading challenges dilutes that.
If I wanted to keep my reading challenge a secret, I would have joined one of those apps like Fable or StoryGraph.
