David Lazarus is starting The Power of Regret: How Looking Backward Moves Us Forward
I'm going to leave this thought bubble here before reading this book. I disagree with the basic premise that you should have regrets, and not having them is necessary. What he misses is this: I don't have regrets because I truly don't believe in free will. There are things I wish had happened differently, but I don't regret them because I know they couldn't have happened differently. I spend a heckm at peace about

Excellent book with deep insights. His disregard for therapy and self-help is a weakness. In mentioning the remedy for negative emotional reverberation on page 131, he is only able to point to 'some pharmacological agents'. Meanwhile, his dismissal of the usefulness of self-help books is insulting.

It's got value; however, it's limited to this classic syndrome he's identified.
Also, it's just another book filled with cases selected from the wealthy clients who can afford to see them, and wealthy people have different problems to the rest of us.

Very entertaining page-turner. Full of technical descriptions, but fascinating if you can stay with it. I have no idea how true the science is, so I'm just awed by it. Appealing themes include 'person battling in a strange environment', 'battling against unbelievable odds with indefatigable faith', 'humanity's willingness to save the individual', etc.

What else is it about? A nation turned in on itself; almost self-destructing; a people abusing themselves, with hope on the margins. And the survival and hope of children.
