Very readable, the translation captures the voice of the various oral accounts which Alexievich gathered. The first hand accounts of women, most very young, thrown into war are harrowing, heartening, and challenge my notions of the soldiers that fought in the Cruel War.

I am only more excited to read Zinky Boys by Alexievich following this one.

This is a easy and quick read so far. It alternates between telling Rick's the day by day account of the rescue and Rick's retelling of his previous adventures. The author's passion for his craft is clear as is his story telling ability.

I know nothing of hardship and am extremely lucky to have been born in America.

It's amazing how similar the events in Soviet prison camps were to those in Nazi Germany. Also some striking parallels to mass deportations seen today in the US and similar action in China.

Good and in depth history on the Soviet prison system so far. Despite the density of information, Applebaum's writing is highly readable.
